A Way of Seeing Coastal Photography By Philip Pook

We were thrilled to receive the email from Nicola at Trewoon. Having visited one of our on-line galleries Nicola wanted to let us know the images had "cast a spell" over her. Such praise from someone who sees the beauty of Poldhu Cove daily through the seasons was praise indeed. Imagine then our delight when after several emails and a chats on the phone Nicola decided to hang several of our Ltd Edition Prints in her beautiful cottages and allow us to offer them for sale to her clients!

The Photographs were all taken while we stayed in Chocolate Box Cottage in February/March of 2011. Having a great love of coastal photography and particularly the light in Poldhu Cove, the Trewoon cottages are perfect. Being able to sit in comfort while waiting for the light to drop into golden hour, then gear ready stroll down through the gardens to the cove is a real treat. My camera kit is quite large, I carry all sorts of filter systems and accessories so being so close to the water's edge is fantastic. The image here is 'Trewoon Twilight' it is one of a small Ltd Edition collection we are now putting together to offer clients at Trewoon cottages and others who love this area. Twilight is just about my favourite time to shoot, after sunset is especially good in Poldhu and its sister coves Church and Dollar Cove. Poldhu, in particular, with its wide aspect and sunsets is superb. The really shallow shelf allows for a long slow tide, most seasons, which gives me more time to move around the cove to capture the reflections in the, often, mirror like pools and wet rocks. Artists have flocked to St Ives for the light in Cornwall, Poldhu Cove however has a colour cast all of its own, the winter light with its lowerhumidity and clarity is amazing to work in.

All this in the knowledge that the freshest fish I've had the pleasure of eating is waiting a short trip away in the cottage! Just ask Nicola where to buy the fish. Returning to the cosy Chocolate Box Cottage after an early evening working in one of Cornwall's most photogenic Coves to cook and eat one of Rick Stein's favourite simple dishes (Gurnard in sage and garlic butter) from one of the best and friendliest restaurant suppliers is an experience I, personally, will repeat again and again.
